Arizona Hills - a photo on Flickriver

Arizona Hills

This is in the outskirts of Safford, Arizona, a small town between the Graham and the White mountains. This land will soon be developed by Phelps-Dodge, one of the leading copper producers in the world.

My family is a mining family. My great-grandfather, my grandfather, my dad and his brother were all copper miners. Not to mention countless other family members. But copper mining is incredibly destructive to environments -- huge stepped pits are carved out of the earth, creating upside down ziggurats... pre-monuments to the minerals we seem to need.

Here is a photo of the Morenci mine; one of the largest copper mines in the world, only an hour away from this spot.
