Flaking red pine bark - a photo on Flickriver

Bark has growth rings too, if it sticks around long enough. Just like
wood, temperate tree species lay down a single layer of bark each year
as well. The outer layers of bark of some species flake off, as in this picture of red pine. Other species' bark peels off differently (paper birch and jack pine).

Red pine bark looks different at different stages of the tree's growth. This is a fairly young tree (I would guess 60-100 yrs old). Very large and old red pines have much more plate-like bark.
