Saltator similis, popularmente conhecido como trinca-ferro-verdadeiro, é uma espécie de ave da família Emberizidae.
Mede 20 cm de comprimento. Pode ser encontrada nos seguintes países: Argentina, Bolívia, Brasil, Paraguai e Uruguai. No Brasil, está presente no Mato Grosso, Goiás e Bahia em direção sul até o Rio Grande do Sul, incluindo toda a Região Sudeste.
Seus habitats naturais são: florestas subtropicais ou tropicais húmidas de baixa altitude e florestas secundárias altamente degradadas. É comum em capoeiras, bordas de florestas (inclusive de galeria) e clareiras, tanto em regiões de baixadas como em montanhas. Vive aos pares e canta com freqüência, sendo fácil de observar, principalmente em árvores frutíferas.
Põe ovos lustrosos azul-esverdeados com uma coroa estreita de rabiscos e pontos pretos. O macho trás comida para a fêmea no ninho. Conhecido também como esteves (Bahia), tico-tico-guloso, bico-de-ferro, pixarro e trinca-ferro-de-asa-verde. Em Santa Catarina (região sul) é conhecido também como Papa-Banana.

O trinca-ferro ou tempera-viola (Saltator similis) é uma ave passeriforme da família Thraupidae, que ocorre no Brasil e países limítrofes, de coloração geral olivácea, cabeça acinzentada, garganta ocre-clara, peito e abdome cinzento-oliváceo, lavado de ocre no meio. Sua dieta baseia-se em frutos silvestres e insetos, podendo alimentar-se também de pequenos vertebrados, inclusive atacando ninhos de outras aves para alimentar-se de ovos e filhotes. É uma ave extremamente territorialista, onde o macho dominante, através de seu canto extremamente alto, tenta manter afastado outros machos que tentam adentrar seu domínio.
O macho e a fêmea são idênticos, sendo o canto o fator que os distingue. Em alguns casos a fêmea pode desenvolver uma espécie de canto parecido com o do macho, mas não tão alto, sendo perfeitamente distinguível. Não se sabe ainda o motivo palo qual algumas fêmeas desenvolvem este canto. Tal fenômeno foi observado em aves mais velhas.
É uma ave altamente valorizada por criadores e é alvo constante de contrabandistas de animais silvestres. Sua criação em cativeiro exige autorização especial do IBAMA, uma vez que este pássaro faz parte da fauna brasileira. Recomenda-se, para aqueles interessados em criar esta ave, a compra de espécimes provenientes de criadouros certificados e anilhados,a fim de evitar o contrabando de aves.
O trinca-ferro é uma ave que, quando em cativeiro, exige uma alimentação variada e um ambiente limpo e amplo, com exposições diárias ao sol, preferencialmente no período matutino. Seu período reprodutivo se dá entre agosto e novembro, sendo que sua ninhada consiste normalmente em 2 ou 3 filhotes, podendo haver excessões.
A maior dificuldade em conseguir sua reprodução em cativeiro está na alimentação dos filhotes, que consiste basicamente em insetos, sendo que na natureza os pais fornecem uma grande variedade de espécies a fim de conseguir todas as proteínas necessárias para o desenvolvimento necessário dos filhotes. Seu habitat natural é a orla das matas, dificilmente sendo encontrado em regiões de mata fechada, preferindo viver na capoeira.

The Green-winged Saltator (Saltator similis) is a species of cardinal (bird) in the Cardinalidae family. It is found in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay, and ranges into the southern cerrado and the pantanal.
Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and heavily degraded former forest.

Saltator is an American genus of songbird. They are traditionally placed in the cardinal family (Cardinalidae) but actually seem to be closer to tanagers (Thraupidae). The name saltators is the English name for the group for lack of a better term, and the English names of all except two species end in "Saltator".[1]
Saltator is Latin for "leaper" or "dancer". Louis Jean Pierre Vieillot applied it to this genus because of the heavy way the birds hop on the ground.[2]
The saltators as traditionally defined are apparently neither monophyletic nor allied with the cardinals. As already noted over 100 years ago[3], they are a morphologically diverse group, encompassing generally robust and fairly drab nine-primaried oscines. The different species may appear more similar to grosbeaks, tanagers or even shrikes than to cardinals, and the pattern of their eggs is also conspicuously diverse[4]. Altogether, the "genus" seems more like an assemblage that is brought together more by the fact that these birds seemed even less close to other groups than among themselves, rather than by a very close relationship[5]. More extreme cases of adaptive radiation exist in birds, but this process hardly ever occurs outside island groups like Hawaiian honeycreepers, vangas, Malagasy warblers or the famous Galápagos finches.
The latest comprehensive analysis of the genus was a 1977 study[5] which today would not be accepted whole-cloth because it followed the phenetic methodology then en vogue but now considered outdated. Nonetheless, even here the case for Saltator monophyly was weak already. Where Saltator species have been included in cladistic studies[6] they appear to be related to various tanagers. If this is verified after a more thorough study they would probably be transferred to this family. Preliminary work[7] seems to support this, but for now they are best considered incertae sedis.
