A Galeria Schad da Biodiversidade explora a biodiversidade do nosso mundo e é um das mais populares galerias populares do museu. A Sapucaia é uma árvore que está em extinção. Nos dias atuais, a maioria é cultivada em viveiros.
Ela passa por fases em que muda de forma e cor durante o ano. Depois de ficar despetalada, revigora-se tomando uma cor verde que, aos poucos, vai se transformando nesta cor Vermelha-vinho, para, em seguida, tornar-se uma árvore com as folhas meio que douradas.

Nome científico: Lecythis pisonis Camb.
Família botânica: Lecythydaceae
Origem: Brasil - Floresta Pluvial Atlântica
Características da planta: Árvore de até 30 m de altura e tronco que pode atingir I m de diâmetro, copa densa. Folhas caracteristicamente róseas quando jovens, verdes posteriormente Flores grandes de coloração lilás arroxeada. Florescem em abundância no meses de setembro a outubro.
Fruto: Arredondado, casca rígida e espessa de coloração castanha. Quando 222 maduros abrem-se na porção inferior, através de uma característica "tampa", liberando as sementes (castanhas) comestíveis e saborosas. Frutifica nos meses de agosto a setembro.
Cultivo: Propaga-se por sementes. Caso o fruto seja colhido antes da maturação, deixá-lo ao sol para que se abra e libere as sementes. Necessita de solo argiloso, rico em matéria orgânica e sombreamento.
Pelo nome de sapucaia é conhecido, no Brasil, um grande número de árvores que pertencem à família botânica das Lecitidáceas, a mesma à qual pertence a imponente castanheira-do-brasil ou castanheira-do-pará.
Em sua maioria, as sapucaias caracterizam-se pela peculiaridade de seus frutos. Na forma de urnas, de casca dura e de aparência lenhosa, estes encerram uma boa quantidade de amêndoas comestíveis e muito apreciadas, que se espalham pelo mato quando, um a um, os frutos amadurecem e, espontaneamente, seus opérculos se desprendem.
As sapucaias e seus frutos, nativos da terra, já eram bastante conhecidos e aproveitados pelas populações que habitavam o Brasil na época da chegada dos primeiros europeus, no século XVI. Estes, por sua vez, sentiram-se atraidos pelas qualidades da planta - útil, exótica e ornamental - e impressionaram-se com suas peculiaridades, tendo fornecido interessantes descrições e detalhamentos de sua conformação.

De acordo com Eurico Teixeira, o viajante Pêro de Magalhães Gândavo descreveu os frutos das sapucaias como grandes cocos muito duros, repletos de castanhas doces e extremamente saborosas. Para ele, esses frutos não parecem criados pela natureza, e sim por algum "artifício de indústria humana" uma vez que suas bocas, voltadas para baixo e cobertas por "capadoiras" que caem sozinhas, permitem que também as "castanhas", tranqüilamente, possam cair e se dissipar.
As amêndoas aromáticas e oleaginosas da sapucaia podem ser consumidas cruas, cozidas ou assadas, constituindo-se em excelente alimento. Podem substituir, em igualdade de condições, as nozes, amêndoas ou castanhas comuns européias, prestando-se como ingrediente para doces, confeitos e pratos salgados.
A sapucaia é árvore característica da floresta pluvial atlântica, ocorrendo desde o Ceará até o Rio de Janeiro, particularmente freqüente no sul da Bahia e no norte do Espírito Santo. Pode ser também encontrada, em estado nativo, na região amazônica. Em alguns casos, na alta floresta, a árvore apresenta a magnitude da natureza que a gerou, alcançando mais de 30 metros de altura.
Quando chega a época da floração, verdadeira festa para as abelhas, a sapucaia se transforma: todo o verde da árvore fica encoberto por uma capa cor-de-rosa, um belo espetáculo propiciado pela conjunção das flores arroxeadas e cheias de aroma perfumado, que tomam a copa da árvore com as folhas novas, que também nascem coloridas de rosa ou lilás.
Aos poucos, as folhas vão ficando esverdeadas e os frutos vão tomando a sua forma característica. Vazios, os receptáculos das amêndoas são transformados pelo homem em objetos de uso e de ornamento: cumbucas, caçambas, vasos, potes, pratos, marmitas e o que mais for preciso.
As amêndoas são muito apreciadas.

The Schad Gallery of Biodiversity explores our world's biodiversity and is one of ther most popular galleries in the museum. The content within the gallery reflects three major themes, "Life is Diverse", "Life is Interconnected" and "Life is in Crisis". Along the periphery of the gallery are a number of large cases that treat specific ecosystems and include Tropical Forests, Boreal Forests, Great Lakes Basin, Grasslands, Western Atlantic Slope, the Arctic, and Coral Reefs.

Aany shrub or tree of the genus Lecythis, of the family Lecythidaceae, particularly L. ollaria of Brazil and L. zabucajo of northeastern South America. The name is also applied to the woody fruit of these plants, so called because it is potlike in shape and suitable in size for a monkey to use.

Origin and geographical distribution : Northern Amazon and Guianas, Atlantic forest.

Status : Wild.

Description : Tree to 12-30 m, propagated by seeds (germination in 35-90 days, recalcitrant) or grafting. The fruit is a brown pyxis, 14-40 nuts/fruit liberated at maturity, each one 5-8 cm long, covered by a coriaceous fibrous tegument.

Uses : Seed eaten fresh or roasted; 51% lipids. Wood for construction.

Lecythis pisonis
a.k.a Sapucaia
Woody fruit, much like the brazil nut fruit, containing several large seeds (nuts) which are eaten raw or cooked.
Uses
Seeds are shelled, then eaten raw, roasted or boiled. Reputedly has a walnut//almond-like flavor.
Plant Cultivation
Large tree to 100+ ft high. Leaves are pink when young. Upon flowering season in September and October, the monkey pot tree becomes covered in thousands of small rose-purple flowers that attract bees. Fruits ripen in 11-12 months. Ripe fruits split open, spilling their seeds across the forest floor.
Propagation: By seed.
Origin and Distribution
Native to rainforest regions of Brazil. The name for the tree comes from an old proverb, "a wise old monkey doesn't stick its hand into a pot", referring to the pot-like receptacles (fruit) that hold the seeds, and monkeys' eagerness to obtain the seeds. Supposedly young monkey's would stick their paw into an almost ripe fruit and would be unable to get it back out for their paws were filled with nuts, while old monkey's would learn it was better to be patient and pull out the nuts one by one.
