Snow storm on the ridge - a photo on Flickriver

            Skiing on a very cold and stormy day; it was snowing hard. This ridge was backlight and beautiful.

In terms of post-processing, I first tried to remove the speckles of the falling snow, as they look like noise. But this didn't work well at all. I also considered doing a black-white version, as I like the feeling of charcoal drawing it gave. But I settled for giving a blue tint to the picture, and yellow highlights on the ridge. I increased the contrast on the center, on the backlight trees that had caught my attention. I made the bottom of the picture darker, and I decreased the contrast on the top right part of the picture. With insight, it might have been a good idea to go for a long exposure, to capture the falling snow as streaks, rather than dots.

Technically, I used darktable for all the post-processing. To give yellow highlights, I used a mixture of split toning and color correction. To adjust the contract, I used a mixture of local contrast filter, tone curve, and equalizer filter to tune the contrast in various parts of the image. Equalizer in clarity preset increases the contrast, while equalizer in bloom preset decreases the contrast and gives a nice soft feeling.
