La tour Eiffel (The Eiffel Tower) - a photo on Flickriver

            Viewed on a clear day from almost anywhere in Paris, the Eiffel Tower (1063 ft. tall), was named after its designer and engineer Alexandre Gustave Eiffel (1832-1923).  Eiffel built the world-famous tower for the 1889 Universal Exposition in Paris.  

Work began on the Tower in 1887.  The work was much criticized by those who believed it wasn't feasible and others who objected on artistic grounds.  Its estimated cost was six and a half million francs.  Today, the tower is recognized as an internationally famous landmark.
