Volcano Citlaltepetl - a photo on Flickriver

Also known as the Volcano Citlaltepetl, Pico de Orizaba is Mexico’s tallest mountain, and North America’s highest volcano, standing at an elevation of 5,675 meters. It’s located at the eastern end of the Eje Volcanico Transversal mountain range, on the border between the states of Veracruz and Puebla. Even though it’s located 110 km inland, the peak is still visible to ships approaching the port in the Gulf of Mexico. It’s one of only three peaks in Mexico that contains permanent snow and glaciers on its peak.
Pico de Orizaba is considered dormant, but not extinct. It had its last eruption in 1687, with previous eruptions in the 16th century. Although the volcano is being monitored, there has been little activity; a few minor earthquakes and no fumarolic activity. The crater on top of the mountain hasn’t changed in shape or size. For now, it looks like Pico de Orizaba won’t be erupting any time soon.

Many hikers attempt to climb Pico de Orizaba, since it’s the third tallest peak in North America. Most climbers start in the town of Tlachichuca, and do their climb around Christmas, during the dry season. A fit hiker can reach the summit in 6-10 hours, and then return to the hiker hut in about half that time.
