Germinating Metarhizium anisopliae conidia

            These are germinating Metarhizium anisopliae conidia (spores). M. anisopliae is an entomopathogenic fungus - kind of like Cordyceps (which is actually the sexual stage of certain fungi in the same family, possibly including some Metarhizium species), but without mind control, and the victims just get sick, die, and get mouldy.

Now here's the cool part, and why I got excited about this image: see that weird texture on the conidia? That's the rodlet layer. It's a layer of hydrophobic rod-shaped proteins that surrounds a lot of fungal spores (not just this species), and it probably protects the spores and helps them stick to surfaces. I'm not great at focusing with the SEM, so this is the best shot I got of it, but isn't it neat?
The dark background is the cuticle of an eastern subterranean termite (Reticulitermes flavipes) worker.
