Maid cafés are a subcategory of the Japanese cosplay restaurants. Cosplay or 'costume play' is a performance art in which participants called cosplayers wear self-made costumes and fashion accessories to represent a specific character.
In maid cafés, waitresses dressed in maid costumes act as servants, and treat customers as masters (and mistresses) in a private home, rather than as café patrons. The first permanent maid café, 'Cure Maid Café', was established in Akihabara in 2001 and they are becoming increasingly popular.
Most maid costumes are based upon the costume of a French maid, composed of a dress, a petticoat, a pinafore and stockings, and are often inspired by Manga, Lolita or Anime styles.
