Pyramide van Austerlitz, Netherlands - 5488

The Pyramid of Austerlitz is a 36 metre high pyramid of earth and was surmounted by a 13 metre high wooden obelisk, built in 1804 by Napoleon's soldiers on one of the highest points of the Utrecht ridge in the Netherlands. It was named "Mont Marmont" or "Marmontberg".
The name Marmontberg was changed to Pyramide by Austerlitz in 1806, despite protests from De Marmont, by Louis Napoleon, the new king of Holland.
The wooden obelisk soon began to collapse obliquely, and was demolished in 1808.
In 1894 Johannes Bernardus de Beaufort, who owned both the estate Henschoten, on which the pyramid was located, and the mayor of Woudenberg, the municipality to which it belonged, had the current stone obelisk placed on the pyramid. This also went awry.
In the course of years, new subsidence arose due to extreme drought or due to extreme rainfall.
In 2010, the pyramid was considerably restored and the obelisk was given a foundation on piles, but as you can see, it still is not straight.
