The North Wall of Hungo Pavi - a photo on Flickriver

            In roughly the center of the park (and our satellite map) stands the great house of Hungo Pavi. This 1,000 year-old structure is typical of many of great houses found in the canyon. It is a multi-storied structure made of sandstone bricks. This masonry style is known as, core-and-veneer. It consists of a "core" of rubble and mud mortar and a "veneer" made up of carefully selected and shaped pieces of sandstone.This photograph captures the north wall of Hungo Pavi. Fajada Butte can be seen in the background. Lieutenant James Simpson and his Mexican guide Carravahal named the structure "Hungo Pavi" during a military expedition into Navajo land in 1849. The name has never been translated and may be a mispronunciation of "Shungopovi," the name of a Hopi village.Hungo Pavi is situated two miles east of Pueblo Bonito at the entrance of Mockingbird Canyon. Although unexcavated, this great house is thought to contain around 150 rooms, an elevated two-story kiva near the center, and a great kiva in the plaza.
