The chapel

The chapel - Fisheye view of the interior of the highly ornate Italian Chapel on Lamb Holm on Orkney.

Built during World War II by Italian prisoners of war housed on the uninhabited island whilst they constructed the Churchill Barriers to the east of Scapa Flow, it remains a remarkable and awe-inspiring place to this day.

The chapel was constructed from the limited materials available to the prisoners. Two Nissen huts joined end-to-end formed the basic shell with the corrugated interior covered with plasterboard and the altar and altar rail constructed from concrete left over from work on the barriers. The majority of the interior decoration was undertaken by Domenico Chiocchetti, a prisoner from Moena. He painted the sanctuary end of the chapel and fellow prisoners helped decorate the remainder of the interior. They created an external facade out of concrete, concealing the shape of the hut to make the building look like a church. The light holders were made out of corned beef tins and the baptismal font was made from the inside of a car exhaust covered in a layer of concrete.

When his fellow prisoners were released shortly before the end of the war, Chiocchetti remained on the island to complete the decoration of the newly consecrated chapel.
