Spitting Spider - Scytodes thoracica

            What a find! My daughter came across this spitting spider on her clothes this evening. It's one of those odd and neat spiders that I've read about but didn't expect to see. Thanks Janneke! Note the reflection by its lower eyes. Perhaps thes eyes have retinas which are angled away from the centre of the head. The fact that they're centred on the head below two other eyes left and right relative to it suggests a role in triangulation.

The spitting spider creeps up on its prey and, after carefully measuring the distance to its target with its legs, it sprays out two zig-zag streams of venom and silken thread at its victim, poisoning and immobilizing it at the same time.
