Winchester Cathedral - a photo on Flickriver

            The Norman Cathedral, started in1076,  ten years after the Norman conquest, was built on the site of the older Saxon Cathedral, Oldminster, where bishops were enthroned from 676 a.d. onwards.  King Alfred's Newminster followed around 900 a.d. but moved to Hyde Abbey in 1110.

Stone for the William the Conqueror's massive new cathedral (longest nave in Europe) was brought in barges up the river Itchen from the Isle of Wight and wood was brought from Hempage Wood in the royal forest towards Alresford.  The more familiar west front (not seen here) was added in the 14th century.
