Orobanche sanguinea - a photo on Flickriver

Broomrapes are perennial parasites on the roots of other plants and so with no green pigment.  A difficult group: the host plant is an important clue to identity, though it can be several metres away, and it may not be easy to decide which of several nearby plants is the host.  The stems are stiff, erect, unbranched, often persisting brown with the dead flowers into the winter.  The flowers are 2-lipped, in spikes, usually coloured like the rest of the plant and with only one bract, which may be hard to distinguish from the deeply divided sepals.  No leaves, but large fleshy pointed scales up the stem.  The fruit is a capsule, mostly egg-shaped.
