Two Hunting Tartans : MacDonald Of the Isles [Modern & Ancient Tartans.] MacDONALD – LORD OF THE ISLES Angus Og, supported Robert the Bruce and led his clansmen against Edward II of England at Bannockburn in 1314. Accordingly Bruce created Angus, Lord of Lochaber and gave him lands of Durrour and Glencoe and the islands of Mull and Tyree. ✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝ Angus left two sons. John his successor became Lord of the Isles. Through a formal treaty in 1335 John supported Edward III’s pretensions. John became known as ‘Good John of Islay’ because of his support for the church. He was an astute politician and had a tremendous military and naval power base in the Western Isles. He was granted lands of Skye, Lewis, Kintyre and Knapdale by John Balliol who saw him as a powerful ally. John wrote to Edward III seeking confirmation of these grants signing himself ‘Lord of the Isles’. ✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝ In 1350 John took his second wife Margaret Stewart. John therefore aligned himself to the Stewart party. John died in 1387. His son Donald was elevated to Lord of the Isles. ✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝ The Lord of the Isles was defeated in 1493 by King James IV and the various branches of the clan evolved under their own chieftains. The main branches were Clan Donald of Sleat (in Skye), Clanranald (in Moidart, Glengarry, Lochaber and Glencoe). The Glengarry line adopted the spelling MacDonnell. ✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝ Today Charles, Prince of Wales currently holds the title. ✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝✝ My other Flickr Sites: Jimmy MacDonald [2] Jimmy MacDonald [3] My Website: Jimmy MacDonald's Website My YouTube Chanel: Jimmy MacDonald's YouTube My Blog: Profiles Blog My Flickr Group Photos: Christians in Prayer & Worship Guestbook: View/Sign Guestbook Photo Guestbook: View/Sign Photo Guestbook
