135/365 Welcome to the Jungle - a photo on Flickriver

            Today, my sister and I built a "rainforest" in my classroom.  We constructed this tree in the middle of my classroom--this is our 4th year doing this, so we're pros now.  

The trunk is a frame made out of welded wire that is cable-tied together.  Then, we cover it with brown butcher paper, paint the tree/wood look on it.  The branches I keep in large plastic bins, so I can reuse them each year.  The leaves are stapled into clumps, and then stapled onto fishing line, that we use to wrap around each branch.  Then, we drape the vines along the trunk.... After that, you throw in a stuffed snake or two, a bat and a spider (all stuffed animals from IKEA and similar stores).  Ta-dah! It's finished!

This kicks off our rainforest science unit for my 2nd graders.

Random Fact:  I want to someday visit a rainforest for an extended period of time.  The prospect excites but also frightens me.  I probably won't ever do it, for fear of the snakes and poisonous animals that I would encounter!  But i really want to meet an orangutan face to face--not just at the zoo. :)

2nd Random Fact:  Today was my parent's 35th wedding anniversary!
