With origins of predecessor institutions going back to the 1800's, the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee didn't come into existence until 1956. A young campus in a city on the verge of the late 20th-century decline of older cities, it struggled under the shadow of more prestigious institutions. But by 2016, UWM can boast of its status as a Tier 1 Research Institution. Indeed, UWM can further boast by exemplifying "The Milwaukee Idea"--the idea that the university's boundaries are the larger community itself. This can be seen in its home campus on the upper East Side of Milwaukee (home of the Kenwood Interdisciplinary Research Complex, the Golda Meir Library, and most academic buildings) and at its many other learning locations--Kenilworth Square, The Global Water Center, the Harbor Campus, Innovation Accelerator, the Zilber school of Public Health, and the School of Continuing Education downtown and at the Hefter Conference Center. UWM reaches out, through its 14 schools and colleges and more than 90 scholarly centers, institutes, and laboratories, literally, to people from age 5 to 95 and involves them in learning, training, degree programs, and lifelong learning.

I attended and graduated from UWM, attend classes at the School of Continuing Education, and I have taught basic computer classes as a grad student and later as an instructor. I'm impressed by UWM's growth, its dedication to learning, research, and its evolution from an institution that in many ways was too self-effacing and humble, but now which roars with a bit more justifiable pride in its accomplishments. There is no doubt that UWM contributes to the economic vitality of the city, region, state, nation, and through its graduates--the world. I can think of no other under-appreciated institution of the city than UWM. Long-time residents are far too pessimistic and are used to disparaging the institution, often from a position of ignorance. I know UWM through my experiences and continued involvement--and I am proud to be a UWM Panther!
