The exploration and colonization of the Explorer Valley is closely linked to the name of Augusto Grosse, a visionary and fierce German explorer who recently arrived in Chile and on behalf of the Ministry of Public Works in 1932 begins the exploration of Western Patagonia in order to fix paths And routes that opened the territory to the colonization. This is considered to be the precursor of most of the road routes that were built in the region including the Carretera Austral.
In 1943 along with collaborators up to the bay Explorers in order to find a route that united the Pacific Ocean with the great General Carrera Lake. After two attempts he manages to realize the feat of walking the valley along its length. Great rivers, thick forests like real impenetrable jungles, rugged mountains, and an ever-adverse climate are no impediment to the explorer's confirmation of his theory, proving that it was possible to connect Lake General Carrera with the sea.
The colonization of Western Patagonia had already begun spontaneously in the early s. XX with the arrival of chilotes and a few foreigners, mainly German. Some of these pioneers settled on the shores of Lake General Carrera, near Valle Tranquilo, founding Puerto Tranquilo. Some 6 families settled in the area mainly to dedicate themselves to cattle and sheep farming. In the middle of the 40's encouraged by the success of the Grosse feat four families decide to go into the valley to start a new and hard life. The avalanches of snow and the torrential rains or the attack of the Pumas diminished the cattle, the humidity and the snow permanently impeded the cultivation. Up to 7 days I would leave the valley on horseback to buy food in Puerto Tranquilo, visiting a doctor was impossible. Thus the valley continued almost uninhabited for decades.
The natural limit for incipient colonization was a high pass that divided the valley into two, a point from which the flow of rivers flowed in opposite directions. To the west the Rio Exploradores and towards the east the Rio Tranquilo, place that today is known like Portezuelo of the Valley Exploradores. In 1993 began to construct a path of penetration that crossed the first 16 kms of the valley, in 2008 already it was possible to arrive until El Puesto, point of access to Glacier Explorers and only in 2010 the section was completed until La Teresa, point Where today a footbridge is built on the Tres Colores river which will allow to reach Puerto Grosse about 12 kms. As the road progressed, new settlers have been arriving as well as investors attracted by the enormous potential of the tourist attractions of the area, such as Englishman Ian Farmer pioneer in the tourist exploration of the valley.
For the tourist to cross the valley not only means to see landscapes of immeasurable beauty but also to live the experience of going through areas untouched by man, where you have the certainty that every corner, each tree, each river has remained as it for thousands of years. Where the loneliness and vastness of the landscape make us feel the fragility of the human being. How is it possible that these settlers decided to live in such a place, so far from the world, exposing themselves to so much loneliness and the most unimaginable risks, regardless of that same fragility ... We do not know. The purchase of land in the valley has grown exponentially, so today it is possible to see more than one construction at various points along the way. Fortunately an important part of the valley is protected by the National Park Laguna San Rafael, but it is inevitable the arrival of new inhabitants and an important flow of tourists, only remains to see how far that indomitable beauty survives the invasion of the mordernity.
