            Negli anni terribili della ežóvščina ho passato diciassette mesi in fila davanti alle carceri di Leningrado. Una volta qualcuno mi “riconobbe”. Allora una donna dalle labbra livide che stava dietro di me e che, sicuramente, non aveva mai sentito il mio nome, si riscosse dal torpore che era caratteristico di noi tutti e mi domandò in un orecchio (lì tutti parlavano sussurrando): 
“Ma questo lei può descriverlo?”
E io dissi:
“Posso.”
Allora una sorta di sorriso scivolò lungo quello che un tempo era stato il suo volto.
