Iglesia - Monasterio Santa Cruz (Coimbra - Portugal)

Iniciado en 1131, bajo el patrocinio de Alfonso Henríquez, fue entregada a la Orden de los Canónigos de la Regla de San Agustín. Entre los personajes notables que frecuentaron la escuela del Monasterio se destaca San Antonio, que en Coimbra tomaría el hábito y las órdenes de San Francisco. La iglesia románica se construyó según los planos del arquitecto francés Roberto.

Entre las obras promovidas por el rey Manuel I se destacan las bóvedas atribuidas al maestro Boitaca o la notable sillería manuelina, de 1513, y cuya parte encimera tiene temática alusiva a los descubrimientos portugueses. Merecen igual destaque las obras encomendadas por el rey a Nicolás Chanterene para la ejecución de las esculturas yacentes de los sepulcros reales, en estilo renacentista. Alfonso Henríquez y Sancho I, los primeros reyes de Portugal, reposan en elegantes túmulos en la capilla mayor de la iglesia, hoy Panteón Nacional. La fachada del monasterio (siglo XVI) exhibe elementos estructurales románicos conjugados con la decoración de la portada. El arco triunfal que antecede a toda la parte frontal es obra del siglo XIX. En la trasera del conjunto monástico se encuentra el Claustro de la Manga, una bella construcción renacentista de una pureza estilística raramente superada. La obra, antiguamente conocida como «Fuente de la Manga», se situaba en el centro de uno de los tres claustros del Monasterio de Santa Cruz. El Claustro del Silencio, manuelino (siglo XVI), incluye cuatro bajorrelieves con escenas de la Pasión, obra de Nicolás Chanterene.

Añadir que, además de su interior, con su órgano y azulejos en las paredes, es muy interesante la fachada principal, tanto por la bonita plaza a la que da como por su "pórtico" de entrada, el cual es muy original.

The monastery was begun in 1131 under the patronage of Dom Afonso Henriques, and given to the order of Augustinian Canons. Among famous scholars of the monastery school was St Anthony of Lisbon, who joined the Franciscan order at Coimbra. The Romanesque church was designed by the French master builder Robert.

Manueline work includes the vaulting, attributed to Boitaca, and the throne, dating from 1513, crowned with decoration alluding to the Portuguese discoveries. The king also commissioned royal tombs, Renaissance in style, the work of Nicolas Chanterenne. The bodies of Afonso Henriques and Sancho I, the first kings of Portugal, rest in elegant funerary chests in the chancel, in what is now the national Pantheon. The facade of the monastery combines Romanesque structural elements with 16th-century decoration around the main doorway. The Triumphal Arch in front of the church entrance dates from the 19th century. Behind the monastery buildings is the lovely Manga Cloister, an unusually pure example of Renaissance. Formerly known as the Manga Fountain, it formed the centrepiece of one of the 3 cloisters of the monastery. The 16th-century Cloister of Silence is Manueline and has 4 bas-reliefs with scenes of Christ’s Passion by Nicolau de Chanterenne.

Besides its interior, with his pipe organ and tiled walls, is very interesting the main facade, both the pleasant square which gives as its "porch" entry, which is very original.
