Sharlston Opencast Mine HDR - a photo on Flickriver

            (Best Viewed Large)  I visited here late last summer, and as I was passing through I thought I would have another look after the recent snow and I wasn't dissapointed, the mine is really deep now and the mountains of spoil seem to get bigger everyday.

The mine is on the site of the old Sharlston Colliery near Wakefield in West Yorkshire UK.

Planning permission for the reclamation of this 60 hectare site was granted by Wakefield Council in 2007 with operations commencing in the autumn of the same year. In addition to a contamination clean-up operation, the company (UK COAL) hopes to recover some 400,000 tonnes of coal, 100,000 tonnes of high grade fireclay and some 377,000 tonnes of red shale.

The site, which has been derelict since 1993, will be fully restored within a 27 month period to include a mixture of residential land, heath land, agriculture, woodland, wetland and will provide for a significantly improved public rights of way network.
