Huhu beetle [cross-eye stereo] - a photo on Flickriver

            The Huhu bug eats inside dead wood and is a favourite Maori food. The bug pupates and emerges as this beetle, which only lives a couple of weeks. Long enough to mate and lay eggs on another suitable dead branch. The beetle does not eat and flies so badly it gets damaged. This one has broken an antenna and a leg and is almost dead, which made it easier to take a stereo pair of images.
 Prionoplus reticularis 
Sometimes called "the hair cutter beetle." If it blunders into a girl's hair, its claws and antenna can become so tangled it has to be cut out, or so the story goes.
