Vauxhall Bridge - a photo on Flickriver

Vauxhall Bridge

            Vauxhall Bridge was opened in 1906 but the design was very plain and so decorative elements were considered. In 1907 the monumental statues, that can be seen today, were added to the bridge. On the upstream piers are Frederick Pomeroy's Agriculture, Architecture, Engineering and Pottery, whilst on the downstream piers are Alfred Drury's Science, Fine Arts, Local Government and Education. Each statue weighs approximately two tons. The one nearest in the photo is Astronomy representing science.
