Falcated Duck - Male - 0215 - a photo on Flickriver

            The Falcated Duck returned to Colusa NWR about a week ago and has been seen most days since. The word "falcated" means "sickle-shaped", and refers to the curved tertial feathers that drape down near the rear. The shingled pattern on the breast is much like that on the Gadwall, perhaps the closest relative to the Falcated Duck.
