I captured a candid shot of this gentleman after seeing his impressive shapely beard. The candid shot lead to a conversation and I offered to make a proper portrait for him and my 100 Strangers project.

Ian, from Largs, told me he was in Glasgow for an interview for a role in Outlander and that since retiring from his previous career he had taken up acting. Ian grew his beard for his current role as a monk in a movie about Robert the Bruce and the Battle of Bannockburn starring Chris Pine. A little Internet search leads me to the Netflix film Outlaw King where Chris Pine is playing the lead role of Robert the Bruce. I'll have to keep an eye out for my 54th Stranger on the screen.

Having met Ian in a heavily shaded area I suggested a relocation across the street to where the last remnants of the low winter sunlight were kissing against a sandstone wall. Happy to relocate, I then posed Ian to make the best use of that light to shape and model his face and the awesome beard that caught my eye in the first place. Captured using natural light only on aperture priority but with some negative exposure compensation to preserve the shadows.

It was a genuine pleasure to meet Ian and hear his story and some great practice for my portraiture of strangers in the street. I thank him for his time and hope that he loves the resulting images as much as I do. Enjoy!
