White Petunies

             Petunia is a, trumpet shaped, widely-cultivated genus of flowering plants of South American origin, in the family Solanaceae.
Some botanists place the plants of the genus Calibrachoa in the genus Petunia. Botanically speaking, tobacco, tomato, potato, and petunia are all in the family Solanaceae.

Le petunie sono note per la bellezza dei fiori, da coltivare in vaso o fioriera. Il genere Petunia comprende 40 specie di piante erbacce, annuali o perenni, per lo più originarie dell'America Meridionale.
Sviluppano ampi cespugli, densamente ramificati, alti 25-60 cm, presentando spesso fusti prostrati o ricadenti; le foglie, di colore verde chiaro, sono ricoperte da una sottilissima peluria, al tatto risultano leggermente appiccicose, ed emanano un caratteristico profumo. 
Negli ultimi anni la Petunia ha conosciuto un notevole successo commerciale, soprattutto grazie agli ibridi a portamento ricadente che hanno invaso il mercato guadangando una notevole fetta di mercato nell'ambito dei fiori da balcone. In Italia e in molti altri paesi europei l'ibrido più conosciuto è la Petunia Surfinia, varietà ricadente propagata a mezzo talea (la pianta è sterile, ovvero produce semi non utilizzabili) di cui esistono molte versione anche a fiori doppi.
