Southern Belle (Hibiscus moscheutos)

               Hibiscus moscheutos(Hardy Hibiscus, 'Disco Belle ' or "Southern Belle" )
'Disco Belle ' is a vigorous, shrubby hibiscus cultivar that grows 
to only 2.5' tall and blooms with flowers measuring up to 9" in diameter. 
Botanically these plants are Hibiscus moscheutos. They are native to marshy areas of North America and sometimes they go by the common name mallow. You may recognize them as close relatives of the not-so-hardy Rose of Sharon shrub, Hibiscus syriacus. They are in the Malvaceae family which also includes hollyhocks and malva. The glossy- leaved tropical flowering hibiscus we love to grow on our patios in the summer is another close relative, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis.  

 Hibiscus moscheutos è una pianta erbacea perenne a foglie caduche, originaria dell'Asia e del continente americano; questi arbusti sviluppano fusti legnosi eretti, alti 80-150 cm, ricoperti da una sottile peluria, che portano larghe foglie ovali, talvolta allungate o trilobate, verdi sula pagina superiore, biancastre e tomentose sulla pagina inferiore, dentate; per tutta l'estate produce numerosissimi fiori a forma di imbuto, larghi 15-20 cm, di colore bianco o rosa, esistono anche ibridi con fiori rosso intenso.  In autunno la pianta perde tutta la parte aerea, che si svilupperà in maniera vigorosa la primavera successiva. In natura questi arbusti costituiscono larghe colonie, nei pressi di paludi o di corsi d'acqua lenti e poco profondi.
