Hibiscus coccineus (Scarlet rose mallow)

             Hibiscus coccineus is also known as scarlet hibiscus, Texas star, scarlet rose mallow or summer poinsettia. It is native to Florida, USA, can reach up to 7 ft (more than 2 m) tall, and bears very ornamental scarlet flowers in summer.
This herbaceous plant has decidious leaves. Leaves are deeply lobed (in fact, they are palmately compound) and have 3-7 lobes. Lobes are narrow, serrated and pointed.
The scarlet hibiscus flowers in summer and early autumn. Each flower has five scarlet petals, and is up to 7 in (20 cm) wide and more. Flowers are short-lived but are regularly replaced.
The fruit is an elongated capsule that is 1-2 in (1-2.5 cm) wide.

L'Hibiscus coccineus è un arbusto di medie dimensioni, o più spesso erbacea perenne, originaria dell'America settentrionale; produce sottili fusti eretti, che spesso divengono legnosi alla base, che portano grandi foglie palmate, che ricordano le foglie di acero, di colore verde scuro, talvolta rossastre. In estate producono grandi fiori a cinque petali, di colore rosso scuro; la fioritura si protrae da giugno fino ai primi freddi autunnali. Le piante a dimora da lungo tempo talvolta divengono arbusti legnosi, che possono raggiungere i 150-180 cm di altezza; generalmente, soprattutto nelle zone con inverni rigidi, con l'arrivo del freddo la pianta perde la parte aerea, che germoglierà nuovamente all'arrivo della primavera. Nelle zone con inverni miti è comunque consigliabile accorciare i fusti in novembre, a 30-40 cm da terra, per evitare che con il tempo la pianta perda le foglie nella parte bassa.
Appartiene alla famiglia delle Malvaceae.Allo stato selvatico il suo habitat naturale sono i corsi d'acqua, boschi umidi, luoghi asciutti e rocciosi delle regioni caldo-temperate, subtropicali e tropicali
