Seeds of Lunaria Annua (Money Plant-Silver Dollars-Moneta del Papa-Moneta pontificia)

             Annual Honesty (Lunaria annua) is a tall (height about 1 m), hairy-stemmed biennial plant native to the Balkans and south west Asia, and naturalized throughout Europe, North America, and parts of Asia. It has large, pointed oval leaves with marked serrations. The common name "Honesty" arose in the 16th century, and it may be due to the translucent seed-pods which are like flattened pea-pods and borne on the plant through winter. In South-East Asia and elsewhere, it is called the Money Plant, because its seed pods have the appearance of silver coins. In the United States it may also be known as "Silver Dollars," also because of the seed pods. In Denmark it is known as Judaspenge and in The Netherlands as Judaspenning (coins of Judas) because of its resemblance to silver coins, a reference to Judas Iscariot.

Lunaria è un genere di Piante appartenenti alla famiglia delle Brassicacee o Crocifere. Comprende piccoli arbusti o erbe alte. Il nome deriva dall'aspetto tondeggiante e piatto del frutto, che seccandosi assume un aspetto argenteo. L'aspetto rotondeggiante e argenteo dei suo frutti maturi le hanno conferito anche il nome comune di "Moneta del Papa" o "Moneta pontificia".
Pianta erbacea perenne, con fusto peloso ramificato, alto fino ad un metro, con radici carnose.Le foglie sono verdi brillanti, caduche, opposte; picciolo molto allungato nelle foglie inferiori, diminuente di lunghezza verso l'apice del fusto fino a diventare nullo o subnullo; lamina ovata a base cordata e apice acuminato, lunga 10-15 cm, margine con dentelli triangolari senza mucrone.
Fiori ermafroditi attinomorfi, dialipetali, inodori, con 4 sepali arrossati o concolori alla corolla, 4 petali grandi spatolati, di colore porpora, rosato e più raramente bianchi (in tal caso il calice è verde), lunghi 1-2 cm, riuniti in mazzetti; stami 6 di cui 4 centrali lunghi e 2 laterali brevi (tetradinami); ovario supero con 2 carpelli fertili.
Il frutto è una siliqua di grosse dimensioni (lunga da 2 fino ad oltre 6 cm) deiscente, appiattita e di forma ellittica o subrotonda, arrotondata o leggermente smarginata all'apice, di colore dapprima verdastro e poi argentato, eretta o appena pendente, con 2 valve e una membrana centrale contenente i semi, che sono visibili in controluce. Lo stilo, persistente e filiforme, va a formare una resta all'apice di ciascun frutto.
