Sardegna - Streptopelia turtur (Tortora europea)

            The Turtle Dove (Streptopelia turtur), also known as European Turtle Dove is a member of the bird family Columbidae, which includes the doves and pigeons.
It is a migratory species with a southern Palearctic range, including Turkey and north Africa, though it is rare in northern Scandinavia and Russia; it winters in southern Africa.
Smaller and slighter in build than other doves, the Turtle Dove may be recognised by its browner colour, and the black and white striped patch on the side of its neck, but it is its tail that catches the eye when it flies from the observer; it is wedge shaped, with a dark centre and white borders and tips. When viewed from below this pattern, owing to the white under tail coverts obscuring the dark bases, is a blackish chevron on a white ground. This is noticeable when the bird stoops to drink, raising its spread tail.

Della famiglia dei Columbidi è il rappresentante più piccolo. È lunga 27 cm. con un peso di 145-160 g. Ha il corpo slanciato, la testa piccola e il becco breve. Il piumaggio è marrone chiaro con striature nerastre sul collo. La coda graduata di colore nero con bordi bianchi. Il collo presenta delle striature bianche e nere. Gli occhi e le zampe sono rossi. Gola e petto rossicci. La Tortora è un uccello molto diffidente che generalmente vive a coppie o in piccoli gruppi, riunendosi in branchi solamente durante la migrazione o la nidificazione. Frequenta i boschi o zone aperta in prossimità dell’acqua, presso radure erbose. Si nutre di semi, germogli ma non disdegna piccoli invertebrati. La tortora europea è migratrice infatti in autunno se ne va in Africa per svernare e ritornare nella tarda primavera per nidificare. È molto selvatica e rifugge la presenza dell’uomo, quindi nidifica nelle campagne lontano dalle abitazioni, mentre la “tortora dal collare” originaria della Turchia,ormai molto diffusa anche in Sardegna,è stanziale e nidifica proprio nei giardini delle città.
