The dramatic composition of this painting is created by its startling perspective. Mimicking the single focus of the camera lens, it is dominated by the oversize hand. It is as if the hand has been thrust forward closer to the lens on a wrist that telescopes back to the body. The accent is on the distorted anatomy, but its meaning is obscure. This oversize hand resembles the grotesque, guilty hand of the statute in Dali's famous 1929 painting The Lugubrious Game that is commonly read as a comment on masturbation. Here, in The Hand [Remorse], the hand seems more like an assertion of paternal authority.
