Aloe cremnophila (Pic #3 leaf detail/close up)

            Succulent species Aloe cremnophila was discovered hanging precariously from the lip and upper walls of a seven hundred foot high cliff in Northern Somalia. Aloe cremnophila has turgid, glaucous grey-green colored leaves and grows with a clumping habit, eventually forming rambling stems. It is a very attractive plant when pruned slightly in order to promote its tendency to mound up from basal shoots. The plump leaves are quite attractive, and this species is extremely easy to grow and fast to establish. It is amazingly resilient to drought and heat, and always seems to look great in the garden.
 Aloe cremnophila is an excellent choice for rock gardens or rock retaining walls where it can also grow vertically in crevasses. A heavy pupper/offset producer Aloe cremnophila will eventually reach a height of 12" max and can spread 2' to 3'+. The individual leaves have small teeth on the edges but there realitivly soft to the touch. Grown in full sun Aloe cremnophila will have tannish or beige colorings in its leaves. Drought tolerant and very easy to care for.

Native To : Somalia. Aloe cremnophila grows in a very small range/area in its native habitat of northern Somalia (endemic to Daloh and Mait escarpments near Erigavo between 2,000 and 2,133 m).

Flowers : Orange-red colored small tubular flowers on large 12" tall flower bracts. Blooms spring to mid-summer. Attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. 

More Info. : Grows on cliffs in its native habitat so Cremnophila translates to mean "cliff dweller". Aloe cremnophila grows on cliff faces in the Juniperus-Pistacia forest. It is threatened in its native habitat by deforestation of the Juniperus forest which has caused cliff erosion.

Care : Easy to care for Aloe Cremnophila is drought tolerant once established. Grows well in shade or full sun, grown in sun stems turn beige in color. Give occasional water in dry/hot summers. Good draining soil. Adapts to many soil types; poor or rich soils, but cannot tolerate soil that does not drain well especially in winter.
