The Fall: How I Wrote 'Elastic Man' - a photo on Flickriver

            I read Steve Hanley’s* “The Big Midweek” last summer. A recommended book if you like the Fall and want to know the story behind.

Sometimes I wonder if bands like this could have been much greater if they had not wasted most of their energies on ineffective management (in the best case) and violent internal conflicts (in the worst). Or maybe that is part of the creative process?

It may be true that Mark E. Smith is an arsehole, can’t sing, knows little about music and even less about leadership and team spirit. But it’s also true that nobody can copy his style (although many have tried) and there is no Fall without him, even if they had the best musicians of the world. Few other bands had more influence on independent music in Britain.  And they are still around. This man must be doing something right.
