the geek behind the curtain: all shots and layers in this photo assemblage were taken by me with a point-and-shoot camera and the free software package GIMP, plus the latest free trial version (vers. 5) of DAP Auto Painter.

this took 4 layers of DAP and 1 layer of photo to produce, and then an extra layer in GIMP where they were all combined and the colors and contrasts could be slightly adjusted. there are so many ways to make unique images with DAP these days it really blows my mind, so many knobs and twiddles. 2 of the DAP layers (all on the preset "Pino") were run for a couple minutes, and 2 layers were stopped almost as soon as the process began. this gives me a wide range of detail and/or chunky underpainting to play with. the main resource in the end is when i take all the layers into GIMP and decide which bits to erase, which to show, and at what opacities, and do a bit of cloning as well.

this probably took about four or five hours, and its one of my favorite processes. i could easily make nothing but painterly abstractions and erase down to the photo in a few places. i find it endlessly fun. (whereas cutting someone out of their background and putting them into a new scene can be very satisfying at the end but the process is long, tedious, and rather mindless.)
