Hotel Buttress, Land's End, near Penzance, Cornwall, UK

            Despite appearing to comprise pinnacles of alarmingly loose blocks, this ridge near the hotel/visitors' centre is popular with climbers. The person in pale blue, towards the top of the image, is on the 'Land's End Long Climb' route.

Land's End is the most westerly point of mainland Cornwall and England, though not of the island of Great Britain (mainland Scotland extends further west) and if counting islands the Scillies are also further west within England. However, the southernmost point on the mainland, Lizard Point, is only 38½ km away and Land's End is the obvious tip of the peninsula of Devon and Cornwall, so Great Britain is traditionally considered to extend 'from Land's End to John o' Groats'; from here the extreme northeast of Scotland is 1,349 km away by road. 

The bedrock here is a coarse Permian granite intruded into pre-existing sedimentary deposits; the ~65m-tall cliffs are the boundary. The pink towards the bottom of the image is the colour of the weathered granite, with but higher above the sea the most salt-tolerant yellow lichens give way to white/green and shaggier lichen species. 

The western coast of the Penwith peninsula, from St Ives round to Mousehole, is one of the twelve sections of the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty; similar to (but not quite) a National Park.
West Penwith is also 'National Character Area 156', meaning that in the view of Natural England, the area constitutes a natural subdivision of England, by landscape, biodiversity, geodiversity and/or economic activity.
