Turda Salt Mine - Rudolf Mine seen from above

Turda Salt Mine is one of the most important salt mines in Transylvania, one of the largest in Europe. Turda's salt deposit was put into systematic operation of the deposit, by underground mining work, during the Roman conquest. It ceased activity in 1932, to be used as an anti-aircraft shelter during the Second World War.

The salt was extracted as clods, which were then cut by specialist workers. The mines were lit by candles and tallow rush lights. Explosives were never used for exploitation, nor mechanical equipment for cutting the salt.

Salt was exploited in rooms of 17-34m (56-112 feet) depth and 10-12m (33-39 feet) width, disposed one near the other and separated by a safety consolidation.

The microclimate in the mine is characterised by yearly variations of temperature between 11 - 12° C; the average humidity level inside is 80% and the air pressure is between 747-752 mm Hg. The lack of pathogen bacterium and a moderate air ionisation is therefore favorable to breathing treatments.

Turda Salt Mine got a complete makeover with the help of a European Union grant amounting to 5.8 million Euros. The salt mine now features sport fields, an underground wharf, an amphitheatre with heated seats and a constellation of suspended lamps that create a festive atmosphere. Inauguration took place on January 22, 2010. The old salt mine is now a must-see for those who travel along the E60 European road.

Structure:
Rudolf Mine (started in 1867) has a trapezoidal shape, 50 m width, 80 m long (at the base) and 40 m height. The stairs descend along 13 floors, each of them being marked with the year when it was dug. Due to water infiltrations, salt stalactites formed growing 2 cm/year. After modernization, Rudolf Mine features a concert room, sports field, gondola, minigolf, bowling. A panoramic elevator has been installed permitting easy access and a spectacular view over the mine.
Ghizela Mine has been opened in 1857 and it was going to be similar to Rudolf Mine, but the work was abandoned.
Terezia Mine is a 90m deep bell-type mine, in whose hearth a subterranean lake of 5-8 m depth and 70 m width formed. This mine has been exploited since 1690. A little wharf and boats as well as an originally designed promenade have been arranged on the subterranean lake.
Franz Josef Gallery is a 917 m long horizontal gallery, used for the transportation of salt to the surface.
