Miss Lilou, Afar girl with traditional haircut, Danakil, Ethiopia

Lilou means "Diamond" in Afar language... The traces she has on the face are scars to make her more beautiful. The dreadlocks mean she's not (yet) married.
Later (but not too much), she'll marry her cousin.
As many girls, she may be infibulated...So the wedding night will start with a knife...
That's the way some afars still do.
I gave her a Polaroid of herself, and she was very upset when she saw the result: her scarve was not put in the good way!!

Lilou signifie Diamand en langue Afar. Les traces qu'elle porte sur le visage et les joues sont des scarifications que les jeunes se font pour paraitre plus belle (encore). Les tresses indiquent qu'elle n'est pas encore mariée. De toute manière, elle est promise comme toutes les femmes afar à son cousin germain... Comme toutes les filles de la region d'Assaita, elle a les dents taillées en VVVV, et s'étonna des notres!
Coquette jusqu'au bout, elle fut tres mecontente du polaroid que je lui laissais: son echarpe etait mal mise!
