Hester Shaw (from The Hungry City Chronicles)

            From the first sentence on her Wikipedia entry: "Hester is quite angry and vengeful and obsessed with killing Valentine, who killed her parents."

A much older Hester Shaw from when readers first meet her in the amazing MORTAL ENGINES by Philip Reeve. A novel (and eventually a quartet) set in the far future, 4,000 years give or take, where the earth has been decimated by climate change, oceans have dried up, and humanity is just pulling itself back from the brink of extinction. To survive, cities and towns have had to go mobile, and resources are scarce, so a violent, brutal form of civilzation, 'Municipal Darwinism' dominates everyone's lives.

A thrilling read, and worth tracking down (currently out of print, so search used bookstores).
