Old Sarum-03

            The earth banks are the remains of the castle founded by William the Conqueror and enhanced by successive Kings of England.  Originally the banks would have been faced with timber, the wooden planks being covered with plaster and whitened with lime.  Over the next hundred years the castle was rebuilt in stone and for a while it was regarded as one of the most beautiful buildings in England.  It served as a royal residence, administrative centre, courthouse and gaol.  Here, from time to time, King Henry II imprisoned Eleanor of Aquitaine, his Queen.
