Mine Headquarters Building - a photo on Flickriver

            Kirwin Mining District, WY

This is the old Headquarters Building for mining operations within the Kirwin mining district deep within the Shoshone National Forest in Wyoming.  Though there was mining here off and on from the late 1800's up through the 1980's, all mining has ceased and the town is a "ghost town".  The boxes on the left are for storing core samples - cylinders of rock drilled out of the ground to determine how much metal (copper, silver, etc.) is below and to determine if and where to create a new mine shaft.

I was up here in the summer of 2003 working with the WY State Historical Preservation Office and the National Forest Service working to help preserve some of the buildings and log cabins.  It's a place with a very interesting history tucked between some of the most beautiful wilderness areas.
