Polar bears are attractive and appealing, but they are powerful predators that do not typically fear humans, which can make them dangerous.

The polar bear is a carnivorous bear whose native range lies largely within the Arctic Circle, encompassing the Arctic Ocean, its surrounding seas and surrounding land masses.

Because of ongoing and potential loss of their sea ice habitat resulting from climate change, polar bears were listed as a threatened species in the U.S., across their range, under the Endangered Species Act in May 2008.

Polar bears are the largest land carnivores in the world, and sit at the top of the food chain in the biologically rich Arctic. The most carnivorous of the bear species, polar bears feed primarily on the fat of ice-dependent seals.

Adult males 550 - 1,320 lbs (but can reach 1,760 lbs); females 200-700 lbs
Lifespan: 20 - 25 years
