A lone tree grew on the hilltop where the sea wind blew and nearby a spirit was often seen. Silhouetted by the sky, her hair dancing with the breeze, the spirit’s outline was all that anyone had witnessed. Yet the hill was known to be occupied and the spirit’s name was Amenti.

Long ago people from the nearby village had climbed the hill to offer victuals, but the practice had long since ended. Although neglected, Amenti remained however and now, during times of change, her presence was increasingly felt by the villagers. 

Change, it seemed, had come full circle and returned something lost!

Late one evening, a widow whose husband had been taken from her early, ascended the hill as the stars first came into view. Their points of light running with her tears as she cried out to Amenti for life's reason. 

"Why me?" she called. "Why take from me, who is without malice in their heart? What purpose is served by my pain and suffering?"

In the darkness a hawk echoed as the wind carried the scent of the sea. Falling to her knees the widow sobbed into her hands, but presently Amenti came to her saying: 

"Give me your tears that I may return them to you as strength. Show me your despair that courage may re-enter your heart."

The widow was taken aback by these words for there was no-one in sight! Looking frantically in all directions she grappled with her emotions. 

"Show yourself to me! Show yourself!" she called into the wind.

"I have," whispered Amenti "and you shall know me always as solace."

Afterwards the widow descended the hill in silence. She never cried again, but drew comfort from the changing of the seasons and the little, everyday things her tears had hidden from her. 

To her, the world thereafter was a gift and she rejoiced in what was.

Sometimes she caught sight of Amenti, alone on the hilltop and imagined herself dancing with the wind.
