1916 Matchless Motorcycle and Vickers Machine Gun Sidecar Combination

1916 Matchless motorcycle and sidecar combination, fitted with a Vickers .303 machine gun, as used by the Motor Machine Gun Service and later Motor Machine Gun Corps. This Matchless was built for the Imperial Russian Army, but following the Russian Revolution it was never delivered and instead entered service with the British Army, who were already using Matchless combinations, as well as Clyno's and other types. This unique Matchless is owned by a member of The Great War Society www.thegreatwarsociety.com . There are two other MMGC combinations surviving - both Clyno's, one owned by the Imperial War Museum and on display at the National Army Museum as of May 2011, and the other is in the National Motorcycle Museum near Birmingham Airport. The Matchless is the only one of the three in running condition. This photograph was taken with my 1917 Kodak No 2 Autographic camera.
