Adult Deer Ticks in Alcohol (Detail)

The recent Indian Summer (late autumn warm spell) brought the deer ticks back out in force.

We pulled about a dozen off our Golden Retriever the other evening. (Not yet attached, they were just crawling around on his fur.)

Size: The 4 red females are about 1/8 inch, including the legs. The smaller black one is the male.

Ron (the webmaster of the oes.org site) posted comments that clarify the question of when you are likely to get Lyme from a tick bite:

"While it is the smaller stages such as the nymph that is most responsible for transmitting Lyme disease in humans, that may be due to the difficulty in detecting such a small insect on one's body, not because adults don't also carry and have the ability to pass along lyme disease."

My earlier assertion that "it is mostly the smaller nymph form (which are NOT in my photo) that can transmit lyme to humans, during the late spring and early summer." is NOT correct.
