ca. 1470-1480 - 'Hendrik II van Witt(h)em, Lord of Beersel and Braine-l'Alleud (+1454) and Jacoba (Jacqueline) van Glymes, Lady of Bergen op Zoom (+1462)', Sint-Lambertuskerk, Beersel, province of Flemish Brabant, Belgium

            It's hard to tell when exactly this monument to Hendrik II van Witthem and his wife Jacoba van Glymes was made, but it was definitely commissioned after the couple's death by their son Hendrik III, who has got his own tomb, together with his wife, on the opposite side of the church.

The effigies, which are of a remarkable beauty and in surprisingly good condition (note: the effigy of Hendrik has been partly restored during the 18th century and in 1925, that of Jacoba to a lesser degree), are made of alabaster, except for Jacoba's effigy which is made of limestone, apart from her alabaster head, feet and hands.

Some sources online rely on older opinions stating that the effigies were sculpted by Jan (Jehan) Mone, the well-known early renaissance-artist from Lorraine who became "maître artiste" of emperor Charles V around 1520. If Hendrik III commissioned the effigies during his lifetime (he died in 1515) it would be very exceptional for Mone to have made them, since he only moved to the Low Countries around 1520.
Also stylistically, this is completely untrue; e.g. Hendrik van Wittem wears typical Flemish armour of the 1470s, early 1480s. Jan Mone always depicted people in contemporary armour and clothing.

Hendrik II's smooth Italianate Flemish/French armour is covered by a loose-fitting tabard.
Note the short fauld with tassets and smaller tassets on the side, worn over a mail skirt.
Symmetrical couters are laced to the elbows, but his feet are left unarmoured.
Hendrik sports the long hairstyle that became fashionable from the 1470s onwards.
Jacoba's outfit is more reminiscent of a generation earlier. Hendrik's effigy is made of alabaster, while Jacoba's effigy is made of limestone.

Nevertheless, these effigies are a beautiful example of the utmost craftmanship during the last decades of the 15th century in Brabant and Flanders.
