25 of 52 trig points - a photo on Flickriver

also known as Soldier's Lump or Holme Moss trig point.

The tropical temperatures of last week disappeared leaving rain, wind, and cooler weather on the menu for this weekend.

Saturday was a write-off, so being optimistic we headed on to the high moors between Crowden and Wessenden to dodge the clag and rain showers on Sunday.

Fortune favours the brave, and some patches of sunshine started to appear, one of which luckily coincided with our arrival at Black Hill summit (with it's recent coat of paint).

The summit is marked on the OS map as Soldier's Lump - apparently after the Army Force which first came to survey here in 1784, their wooden equipment being used as foundations for the original trig point due to the boggy conditions.

The stone layers that surround the base of the trig point unfortunately represent the peat erosion that has occurred on this moor over the years - it didn't get the name Black Hill without reason, but luckily steps are now being taken to restore this unique landscape
