Cossack tragedy at Leinz, Austria, 1945

            This painting, located in the Kuban Cossack museum in Freewood Acres, illustrates a grim moment during the aftermath of WWII. Thousands of Russians and other Slavs (Byelorussians, Ukrainians, etc.) who found themselves in Europe at the end of WWII, were forcibly repatriated back to the Soviet Union. This depicts a particular episode when the British Royal Marines were ordered to take away a large group of Cossacks living in a DP camp in Lienz, Austria. The Russians attempted to resist and stood their ground.. some tried to fight back, while others began to pray (led by the priests in the center of the painting), and a few even resorted to suicide. As one can see, any attempt at resistance was met by brute force. Yet despite the best efforts of the "Tommies", many Russians managed to escape repatriation, and its possible to find plenty of survivors and witnesses of this very scene.
