            Mauritshuis Room 3 - The Flemish Masters

In the mirror behind me is the painting:
-The Adoration of the Sheperds by Jacob Jordaens c. 1617
Mary is holding the sleeping Jesus in her arms, showing him to the shepherds. The painter has zoomed in, giving us the feeling that we are in the front row, in the best spot to see the child. And the reflections in the shiny brass jug.

The painting has elements of the style of Caravaggio, who was known for his strong lighting effects and raw naturalism. However, the Flemish artist Jordaens never went to Italy. He was introduced to Caravaggism through other painters, such as Rubens.

On the right upper: 
-Wooded Landscape with Figures by Alexander Keirincx, Cornelis van Poelenburch c. 1630?
In an idyllic landscape with trees, a stream and a pool, some bathers have gathered by a small waterfall. The landscape is by the Antwerp painter Alexander Keirincx, a pupil of the landscape painter Abraham Govaerts. Keirincx did not paint the figures in the landscape himself. They were painted by Cornelis van Poelenburch.

Shortly after its completion, this painting came into the possession of Prince Frederik Hendrik and Amalia van Solms, who hung it in one of the stadholder’s palaces.

On the right below:
-Country Fair by David Vinckboons 1629
A village fair is in full swing. People are eating, drinking, dancing and kissing. On the left a man is vomiting – the unpleasant side effect of over-indulgence.

At the end of the sixteenth century, David Vinckboons moved from Flanders to Amsterdam, where he introduced the theme of the country fair to Holland. Vinckboons’ peasants and their humble pleasures were a source of amusement to collectors from the bourgeoisie.
