Havana train station and power generation plant

            In the Spring of 2017, Cuba still relied heavily on crude oil donated by the Venezuelan government (nearly 50% of the oil consumed in Cuba) to float the economy. The city of Havana electrical generating station, lacking modern pollution controls burns lower grade poorly refined bunker from heavy crude to feed the city distribution network. 

The resulting smoke and ash, high in sulphur and heavy metals represents a serious health concern for the people living in the city of Havana and within the footprint of the stack exhaust plume. It is a sad irony that Cuba exports medical expertise to Venezuela in exchange for oil, yet suffers increased health concerns locally, a result of burning oil for electricity.
